What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

Discord is unusual among the platforms people use this tool for, because it already has text formatting built in. Two asterisks around a word give you real bold, a single asterisk or underscore gives italics, two tildes give strikethrough, and two vertical bars hide text behind a spoiler. That formatting is rendered by Discord itself, adapts to the reader's theme, and stays readable to everyone including people using a screen reader. So the honest advice is that for emphasis inside a message, Discord's own markdown beats anything on this page. Where Unicode styles earn their place is everywhere markdown doesn't reach. Usernames, server nicknames, and status text, none of which support formatting at all.

How to use it

Type your text above and tap Copy on the style you want. For a server nickname, right-click your own name in the member list, choose Change Nickname, and paste. For your global display name, open User Settings, then Profile, and paste into the Display Name field. In messages, just paste and send: no formatting syntax needed, because the characters carry their own appearance.

What works where

Discord's font stack covers Unicode well on desktop and reasonably well on mobile, so most styles render as intended. Two caveats are worth knowing before you commit. First, combining-mark styles like strikethrough and underline stack a separate mark onto every character, and Discord's message renderer sometimes collapses these on longer strings, leaving the marks bunched or misaligned. For those two effects, Discord's own markdown syntax produces a cleaner result. Second, some servers run moderation bots that normalise unusual Unicode in nicknames back to plain text, or refuse it outright. That's a server configuration rather than a Discord limitation, so it varies from one community to the next.

Common questions

What is Discord's built-in formatting syntax?

Two asterisks for bold, one asterisk or underscore for italics, two underscores for underline, two tildes for strikethrough, and two vertical bars for a spoiler. Hash characters at the start of a line make headers. The one that catches people out is the double underscore: in Discord it means underline, but in standard Markdown it means bold, so text copied between the two renders differently.

Should I use these or Discord's built-in formatting?

Use Discord's markdown inside messages. It renders natively, respects the reader's theme, and stays accessible. Use Unicode styles for the places markdown can't reach: nicknames, display names, and status text.

Why did the server change my nickname back?

Some moderation bots normalise decorative Unicode in nicknames, either to keep the member list readable or to stop people impersonating others with lookalike characters. That's a per-server setting; ask a moderator whether it applies.

Do these characters work in channel names?

Some do, but Discord lowercases and strips a good deal of what you type into a channel name, so results are unpredictable. Test on a throwaway channel before renaming anything people rely on.
