What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

Ready-made combos

The same style inside each frame. Type above and these update with it, then tap to copy the whole thing. The number is the character count, which matters if you are pasting into a field with a limit.

Sans bold italic is the heaviest of the four sans weights, starting at U+1D63C. It stacks weight on slant, which is the most emphatic combination available without moving to a decorative style, and like most maximum settings, it is more useful as a limit than as a default.

Where it works, and where it breaks

The set is fully contiguous across both cases. Digits are not covered, in common with every slanted set in the block.

The reason to keep it for one line is that emphasis is relative. In a profile where a name is sans bold and a detail line is sans-serif, a single sans bold italic phrase reads as the most important thing on the page. In a profile where everything is sans bold italic, nothing does, and you have simply made all your text harder to read: slant and weight both cost legibility, and stacking them costs more.

That makes this the style most improved by having the other three available. Used as one level in a four-weight hierarchy it is precise; used alone it is just heavy.

Where it works

One line, at most. It is the heaviest of the four sans weights and stacking slant on weight is the most emphatic combination available before moving to a decorative style.

Used as one level in a hierarchy that already has sans bold, it is precise: the eye goes to it first and knows why. Used as the only styled element, it gains little over plain sans bold and costs more legibility, since slant and weight each slow reading and together they compound.

Digits are not covered, in common with every slanted set in the block, so numbers in your text stay plain.

Common questions

When should I use this rather than sans bold?

When you need a level above sans bold in a hierarchy that already uses it. If sans bold is your only styled element, adding the slant gains little and costs some legibility: slant and weight each make text slower to read and stacking them compounds it.

Are all four sans weights from the same design?

Yes. Sans-serif, sans bold, sans italic and sans bold italic are four weights of one design in the same Unicode block, which is why they sit together consistently in a way that mixing unrelated decorative styles does not.
