What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

Ready-made combos

The same style inside each frame. Type above and these update with it, then tap to copy the whole thing. The number is the character count, which matters if you are pasting into a field with a limit.

Old English is the name most people search for; Unicode calls it bold fraktur. It is the heavier weight of the blackletter pair, starting at U+1D56C, and it is the style most associated with band logos, streetwear graphics and tattoo lettering. Contexts that want weight and gravity rather than legibility.

Where it works, and where it breaks

Unlike plain fraktur, which borrows five uppercase letters from an older Unicode block, this set is fully contiguous. Every letter comes from the same design, so there are no odd capitals sitting differently from the rest. If you want blackletter without visible seams, this is the one.

The heavier stroke also survives small rendering better than plain fraktur does. Blackletter depends on the contrast between thick and thin strokes, and thin strokes are the first thing lost when a device draws a character small. More weight means more of the letterform survives.

What does not improve is reading speed. Blackletter was designed for pages of text read slowly by people who had grown up with it, and a modern reader parses it much more slowly than upright letterforms. Across a name or a two-word tag that is fine. Across a sentence it stops being decoration and starts being an obstacle.

Digits are not covered.

Where it works

Short strings in prominent positions. A name, a two-word clan tag, a single word in a bio. Blackletter carries more weight per character than anything else here and loses readability faster than anything else too.

It has strong associations, which is usually the point. Band logos, streetwear, tattoo lettering and gaming tags all draw on the same tradition, and using it signals that reference whether you intend it or not.

Across a sentence it stops being decoration and becomes an obstacle. Modern readers parse blackletter far more slowly than upright letterforms, and at bio size on a phone the thick and thin strokes that define it start to merge.

Common questions

Is old English the same as fraktur or gothic?

They are names for closely related blackletter styles, and tools use them interchangeably. Unicode has two blackletter sets, fraktur and bold fraktur, and old English is almost always sold as the bolder of the two.

Why does this version look cleaner than plain fraktur?

Because nothing is borrowed. Plain fraktur has five uppercase letters taken from an older Unicode block that were drawn separately and sit slightly differently. Bold fraktur is fully contiguous, so the alphabet is visually consistent throughout.
