Every platform handles styled text differently, and the differences are not small. Some accept Unicode in one field and refuse it in the next. Some strip it from chat entirely. Some run filters that reject characters without explaining why. These pages cover what each platform actually accepts, which field to paste into, and what happens when you get it wrong. The pattern every platform shares

Almost all of them separate two fields that sit next to each other and behave completely differently.

The handle is infrastructure. It forms your profile URL, other people type it, and it has to match exactly in a search. Every platform here restricts it to plain characters, and no tool changes that. Instagram allows letters, numbers, periods and underscores. X allows letters, numbers and underscores only, between four and fifteen characters, which is the strictest field of the lot.

The display name is cosmetic. Nothing depends on it being unique or typeable, so every platform here accepts full Unicode in it. That is where styled text goes, and it is what every profile with a styled name is actually doing.

Where they differ, and why it matters

Cooldowns. Instagram lets you experiment freely. TikTok locks a display name for seven days and a username for thirty. Roblox allows one display name change a week. On those two, a typo is not something you fix in a minute.

Filtering. Roblox strips unfamiliar Unicode from chat entirely, deliberately, because lookalike characters are the standard way to push a filtered word past moderation. Some Discord servers run bots that do the same to nicknames.

Built-in formatting. Discord and WhatsApp both have their own markdown, and where a platform offers real formatting it beats Unicode outright. It renders natively, adapts to the reader's theme, and stays readable to a screen reader. Use styled characters for the fields markdown cannot reach.
