What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

WhatsApp is the clearest example of why these tools exist at all. It already has text formatting, but only for messages, and only four styles. Your profile name and About line are not messages, so the formatting never runs on them. That gap is exactly where Unicode fills in.

How to use it

For a message, you do not need this page. Type your text with the markers below and WhatsApp renders it as you type. For your profile name or About line, copy a style above, then go to Settings, tap your name, and paste. The change appears immediately for everyone who has you saved.

What works where

WhatsApp's built-in formatting is four styles applied with characters around the text: single asterisks for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough, and three backticks each side for monospace. On mobile you can also select text and pick the option from the menu rather than typing the markers. Two things trip people up: a space between the marker and the text stops it working, and monospace overrides everything else, so it cannot be combined.

There is no underline. Not in the markers, not in the menu, not anywhere. WhatsApp simply does not offer it. That makes the combining-mark underline style here one of the few genuinely useful things this tool does for WhatsApp, since there is no native alternative to compare it against unfavourably.

For everything else in a message, the built-in formatting is better than Unicode. It renders natively, adapts to the reader's theme, and stays readable to a screen reader. Save Unicode for the name and About fields, where WhatsApp gives you nothing.

Common questions

What is WhatsApp's built-in formatting?

Four styles: *bold* with single asterisks, _italic_ with underscores, ~strikethrough~ with tildes, and ```monospace``` with three backticks each side. A space between the marker and the text stops it working, and monospace cannot be combined with the others.

Why won't the asterisks work in my profile name?

Because the name is not a message. WhatsApp's formatting runs on message text, and the profile and About fields are handled separately. That is why styled text there has to be Unicode characters that already look styled, rather than markers WhatsApp interprets.

How do I underline text on WhatsApp?

There is no native underline. It is not among the four formatting options and there is no menu item for it. The combining-mark underline style on this site is the only route, and unlike the other styles here it has no better built-in alternative to lose out to.
