Instagram username fonts, why they don’t work

What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

This page exists to give you a straight answer, because a lot of pages ranking for this question do not. You cannot use styled fonts in an Instagram username. The field accepts letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and nothing else. There is no trick, no workaround, and no tool that changes it, including this one.

Which field accepts styled text, and which rejects it.
Which field accepts styled text, and which rejects it.

How to use it

What you can do is style the Name field, which sits directly above the username on your profile and is what visitors actually read first. Copy a style above, open Edit Profile, and paste it into Name, not Username. The handle stays plain and functional; the line people see in bold becomes whatever you want. In practice this is what every profile with a styled name is doing.

What works where

The restriction is not arbitrary. Your username is infrastructure: it forms your profile URL, it is what people type to tag you, and it has to match exactly in search. Unicode contains large numbers of characters that look nearly identical to ordinary letters, and allowing them in handles would make impersonation trivial. A decorative version of a well-known account's handle would be visually indistinguishable from the original. Every major platform restricts handles for the same reason.

The Name field has no such constraint because nothing depends on it being unique or typeable. It is capped at 30 characters and accepts Unicode freely.

One thing to weigh before styling it: Instagram's search matches against the Name field, so a fully decorative name is a different string from the one someone types when looking for you. Many accounts keep the name readable and style the bio lines beneath it instead.

Common questions

Is there any way to get a styled username?

No. The field accepts letters, numbers, periods and underscores only, and rejects anything else as you type. Any page claiming otherwise is either describing the Name field or describing something that does not work.

Why does Instagram restrict it?

Because handles are infrastructure. They form your URL, they get typed by other people, and they must match exactly in search. Unicode has many characters that look almost identical to ordinary letters, so allowing them would make impersonating a known account trivially easy.

What should I style instead?

The Name field directly above the username. It takes 30 characters of full Unicode and is the line visitors read first. Bear in mind Instagram searches against it, so a completely decorative name is harder to find by typing.
