What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

Ready-made combos

Runic style uses characters from the futhark alphabets, used across Northern Europe from roughly the second century until they were displaced by the Latin alphabet. Some runes genuinely resemble Latin letters. The shared ancestry is real, since both descend from Old Italic scripts, which is what makes the substitution work at all.

The same bio on two devices. The text is identical; only the fonts installed differ.

Where it works, and where it breaks

Coverage is reasonable across the alphabet but the resemblances are loose. Several runes stand in for Latin letters they only vaguely resemble, so the result reads as atmosphere rather than as text. There is no case distinction, and digits are not covered.

Support is the weakest of the lookalike families. Runic is a historic script encoded for scholarly use, and font coverage is correspondingly thin: expect boxes on a meaningful share of devices, particularly older Android handsets.

Of everything on this site, this is the style where testing on a second device before using it matters most.

The lookalike caution applies here too, though less sharply than for Cyrillic. Nobody is impersonating an account using runes, because the resemblance is too loose to fool anyone. The real risk with this style is simpler: a filter that does not recognise the characters may reject the name outright rather than approve it.

Accessibility is the worst of any style on this site. Runic support in screen readers is minimal, so the characters are typically skipped and the name is not read at all.

Common questions

Why do runes resemble Latin letters at all?

Shared ancestry. Both the runic alphabets and the Latin alphabet descend from Old Italic scripts, so a handful of letterforms genuinely have a common origin rather than merely looking alike.

Why is this one most likely to break?

Runic is a historic script encoded mainly for scholarly work, so far fewer fonts cover it than cover Greek or Cyrillic. On an older phone a runic name is quite likely to arrive as a row of boxes.

Can I write actual runic text with this?

No. This substitutes runes by visual resemblance to Latin letters, not by sound, so the output is not meaningful runic writing. It is Latin text wearing runes.
