What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

IGTTRB Platform support. Green renders reliably. Amber works, but breaks on some devices or in some fields. Struck through is filtered out or rejected by that platform.

Ready-made combos

The same style inside each frame. Type above and these update with it, then tap to copy the whole thing. The number is the character count, which matters if you are pasting into a field with a limit.

Slash through uses U+0338, the combining short solidus overlay, and it has a more specific origin than most characters here. It is the mark that negates mathematical symbols: the not-equals sign is an equals sign with this character applied, and the same is true of several other negated relations. It exists so that mathematics can express the negative of any relation without encoding a separate character for each.

Where it works, and where it breaks

Visually it differs from ordinary strikethrough in angle and length. A strikethrough mark is horizontal and spans the full character; this one is short and slanted, so it crosses the letter rather than running through it. On narrow letters the difference is slight; on wide ones like m and w the short slash covers noticeably less, which can look uneven across a word.

It shares the properties common to combining styles. The letters underneath are unchanged, so the text remains searchable and readable to a screen reader. Output is about twice the character length it appears, because each letter carries a hidden mark. And positioning is the text engine's job rather than the font's, so the same string renders differently across apps.

Of the three combining styles here it is the least widely used, which is a reasonable argument for it if you want something less familiar than a plain strikethrough.

Where it works

Short strings where the effect matters more than legibility. The slash is angled and short, so it reads as a mark across a letter rather than a line through a word, and across a full sentence the effect becomes noise.

It is the least used of the three combining styles, which is a reasonable argument for it if you want something that does not look like everyone else's strikethrough.

The practical constraints are the same as the others: output is about twice its visible length, positioning is the app's job rather than the font's, and the letters underneath survive so the text stays searchable and readable to a screen reader.

Common questions

How is this different from strikethrough?

The mark is short and slanted rather than long and horizontal, so it crosses each letter instead of running through it. On wide letters like m and w the shorter slash covers less of the character, which can look uneven across a word.

Why does this character exist?

For mathematical negation. Applying it to a relation produces its negative. The not-equals sign is an equals sign carrying this exact mark. Encoding one overlay was simpler than encoding a separate negated version of every relation.
