What do the labels on each card mean?

U+1D400 The Unicode codepoint the style's characters come from. Two styles can look almost identical and still be different characters with different device support. The codepoint is the only reliable way to tell which one you copied.

Glitch text, often called zalgo, works by stacking combining marks above and below each letter until the result looks corrupted. The marks are ordinary Unicode diacritics, the same ones used to write accents in dozens of languages. Piling ten of them onto one letter is simply using them for something nobody intended.

That is why it cannot be a lookup table. There is no glitch alphabet in Unicode. Every glitch generator builds the effect character by character, choosing which marks to stack and how many.

Where it works, and where it breaks

The output is generated from a fixed sequence rather than at random, so the same input always produces the same result. That matters more than it sounds: if it were random, the version indexed by a search engine would differ from the version you see, and nobody could link to a specific result.

The cost is severe. Each visible letter carries six hidden marks at normal intensity and twelve at heavy, so a ten-character name becomes seventy or a hundred and thirty characters. Against a 150-character Instagram bio that is most of your budget, and against Free Fire's twelve-character nickname limit it is simply impossible.

Rendering varies more than any other style here. Marks stack upward and downward without limit, so tall glitch text can be clipped by the line above it, overlap neighbouring text, or be truncated entirely by apps that cap combining sequences. That is the nature of the effect rather than a fault in it.

One thing in its favour: like the other combining styles, your original letters survive underneath. The text stays searchable and a screen reader still reads real words, though it may also announce every mark.

Short strings, and places where the character budget is generous. A ten-letter name is seventy characters at normal intensity, so a bio line is possible and a gaming nickname usually is not.

The effect suits horror-adjacent aesthetics, clan tags and anywhere the point is that the text looks damaged. It does not suit anything that needs to be read, and it is the style most likely to be clipped or truncated by the app you paste it into.

Worth knowing that the letters underneath are unchanged, so a screen reader still reads real words even when the visible result is unreadable. That is more than any substitution style manages.
