That is why a row of them forms a continuous rule rather than a dotted sequence. Each one still costs a character against your limit, so a long divider is an expensive piece of decoration.

Why some dividers join and others do not

Box-drawing characters were encoded for terminal interfaces, where a line had to run unbroken across a screen. Repeat one and it forms a continuous rule with no gaps. That is what makes them useful as bio dividers.

Dashes were not designed for that. Repeat an en dash and you get a dotted sequence with visible gaps, because each character carries its own side bearings.

The cost is real

Every character in a divider counts against your limit. A fifteen-character rule is a tenth of an Instagram bio spent on something that carries no information. Worth it once as a separator between two sections. Expensive if you use three.

Which to use

The light horizontal at U+2500 is the standard, and the heavy horizontal at U+2501 is its bolder counterpart. The double horizontal at U+2550 reads as more formal.

Em and en dashes are punctuation rather than drawing characters, and using them as a rule produces the gapped look people usually did not intend.

A note on wrapping

A long divider can wrap mid-line on a narrow screen, leaving a stray fragment on the next row. Keep them shorter than your shortest bio line.
